The Geelong community is mourning the loss of Kellie Thistlethwaite, a beloved wife, mother, coach, advocate, and cherished member of the local sporting community. Her passing has left family, friends, teammates, players, and colleagues heartbroken as they remember a woman whose kindness, creativity, and dedication touched countless lives. Kellie was widely respected for her unwavering commitment to supporting women and girls in sport. During the formative years of her club’s women’s football program, she played a vital role in helping create opportunities for female athletes to participate, grow, and succeed. Her passion for inclusion and equality extended beyond the football field, as she consistently championed greater representation for women and girls throughout the sporting community.
As coach of the club’s Under 18 female football team, Kellie helped guide the side to a premiership in 2018. Her leadership, encouragement, and belief in her players earned her widespread admiration and recognition, including a nomination for AFL Barwon Coach of the Year. She took great pride in mentoring young athletes and helping them reach their full potential. Football was also a family passion. Kellie shared many memorable moments with her daughters, Laura and Holly, including playing alongside Laura and later coaching Holly. These experiences reflected the deep love and support she gave to her family throughout her life.
Beyond her achievements in sport, Kellie will be remembered for her warmth, humor, and creative spirit. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel welcome, valued, and supported. Her generosity and genuine care for people left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Heartfelt condolences are extended to her husband Rob, daughters Laura and Holly, and all who knew and loved her. Kellie Thistlethwaite’s legacy will endure through the lives she influenced and the opportunities she helped create. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
