The Amarillo, Texas community is mourning the passing of Gwen Wilson Hicks, a beloved educator, advocate for foster families, and founder of Amarillo Angels, whose life of compassion and service touched countless lives.
Family, friends, former students, and community members are remembering Gwen for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Throughout her career in education, she inspired generations of students with her dedication and genuine care, leaving a lasting impression on those she taught.
Following her retirement, Gwen continued her mission of service by founding Amarillo Angels, an organization devoted to supporting foster families and children. Her passion for improving the lives of foster youth became one of her greatest legacies, earning her admiration and respect throughout the Amarillo community.
Those who knew Gwen describe her as someone who never met a stranger. Whether in church, around town, or among friends, she was known for her warm smile, compassionate nature, and ability to make everyone feel valued and welcomed.
According to her family, Gwen had recently celebrated her birthday with a long lunch among close friends and was in high spirits. Later that day, after returning home, she was found unconscious. It is believed she suffered a heart attack, making her passing sudden and deeply heartbreaking for those who loved her.
Funeral services honoring Gwen’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 5, at 10:00 a.m. at Hillside Christian Church, 6100 South Soncy in Amarillo. Family, friends, colleagues, and community members are invited to attend and celebrate a life defined by kindness and service.
In place of flowers, the family encourages donations to Amarillo Angels, the organization Gwen founded and supported with unwavering dedication.
Gwen Hicks leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and compassion. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, former students, and the many lives she touched. Her memory will continue to inspire kindness and generosity in the community she served so faithfully.
