The Appomattox County, Virginia, law enforcement community is mourning the tragic loss of Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III, who was killed in the line of duty on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
Deputy Duvall, 33, of Concord, was struck and killed while assisting at the scene of a crash on westbound Route 460 in Campbell County. According to the Virginia State Police, the incident occurred around 5:34 p.m. during an eight-vehicle chain-reaction collision.
Authorities reported that Deputy Duvall and another Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office deputy had been traveling home from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy when they stopped to help at an earlier crash. Their patrol vehicles were positioned in the roadway with emergency lights activated as they assisted at the scene.
During this time, a tractor-trailer approaching the area reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid the stopped emergency vehicles. In the process, the vehicle struck Deputy Duvall, causing fatal injuries. Despite the response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The chain-reaction crash involved multiple vehicles and resulted in several additional injuries. Authorities indicated that approximately seven individuals were transported to area hospitals with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Deputy Duvall’s death has deeply impacted his fellow deputies, first responders, and the wider community. He was performing an act of service—stopping to assist others in need—when the tragedy occurred, highlighting the risks faced by those who serve on roadways and in emergency situations.
