The community of Broome, Western Australia, and supporters across the country are mourning the passing of Bob Montgomery, who died at the age of 82 following an extraordinary final chapter defined by compassion, endurance, and service to others.
Bob Montgomery, a former New South Wales state cyclist, spent his final weeks completing a remarkable 5,290-kilometre journey from Broome to Bowral alongside his 18-year-old grandson, Tom Malcolm. The six-week challenge, titled “One Last Ride,” was his sixth long-distance fundraising effort in support of Motor Neurone Disease NSW—a cause deeply personal to him.
His dedication to the cause was rooted in loss. Bob’s cousin, Judith O’Brien, passed away from Motor Neurone Disease (MND), inspiring his long-standing mission to raise awareness and funds for families affected by the illness. Over the years, his efforts contributed more than $200,000 toward supporting those battling the disease.
After successfully completing the journey, Bob and his grandson were warmly welcomed home by family, friends, and supporters who celebrated the incredible achievement. However, the joy quickly turned to sorrow. The day after the ride, Bob suffered a medical episode while returning from a function in Sydney. Emergency services responded and transported him to St. George Hospital, where he later passed away.
His wife, Jenny, was by his side during his final moments. Loved ones have described Bob as a “beautiful soul,” a man whose kindness, resilience, and generosity left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Motor Neurone Disease NSW paid tribute to Bob as a cherished supporter and friend, recognizing his tireless commitment to helping others and the hope his fundraising efforts brought to families living with MND.
Bob Montgomery’s life was defined not just by his achievements as a cyclist, but by his unwavering dedication to making a difference. His final ride stands as a powerful symbol of courage, love, and selflessness—a legacy that will continue to inspire for generations to come.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable journey.
