It is with profound sadness that the family, friends, and wider football community mourn the sudden passing of Alex Hughes, beloved son of Mark Hughes, who died at the age of 38.
Alex’s death has been described as both sudden and devastating. An inquest heard that he collapsed in his bedroom at his home in Prestbury, Cheshire, on June 19. Despite immediate efforts to save him, including CPR performed by his eldest son, he tragically could not be revived. Medical professionals later determined the cause of death to be sudden adult death syndrome (SADS), a condition in which an unexpected cardiac arrest occurs, often without prior warning.
At the time of his passing, Alex was working in a senior role within Grimsby Town Football Club’s player recruitment department. He was respected within the football community for his knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to the game. Colleagues and peers remember him as someone deeply committed to his work and passionate about supporting the development of talent within the sport.
Beyond his professional life, Alex was a devoted father whose children meant everything to him. Those closest to him speak of a man who valued family above all else, whose presence brought strength, care, and love into the lives of those around him.
