A major emergency response was launched in Sydney on Monday after a retaining wall and part of a building collapsed in the Ultimo area, sending heavy debris onto parked vehicles and leaving two men seriously injured.
The incident occurred on Wattle Street, near a Shell service station, at approximately 11:00 a.m. Fire and Rescue NSW crews described a dangerous and unstable scene, with bricks, concrete, and structural debris scattered across multiple vehicles.
Paramedics assessed a total of seven people at the scene. Two men, both believed to be in their 60s, sustained serious injuries, including trauma to the legs and neck. They were transported to hospital for urgent treatment, and later reports indicated their conditions had stabilized.
Emergency responders quickly secured the area, while specialist rescue teams, engineers, and authorities worked to evaluate the structural integrity of the surrounding site. Nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution, and the service station was temporarily closed to ensure public safety.
SafeWork NSW inspectors, along with structural engineers and demolition experts, have launched an investigation into the cause of the collapse. At this stage, officials have not confirmed what led to the structural failure.
The incident has raised concerns within the local community, highlighting the potential risks associated with sudden building or infrastructure collapses. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations remain ongoing.
Further updates are expected as more information becomes available regarding the cause of the collapse and the recovery of those injured.
