The global mountaineering community is mourning the tragic loss of renowned British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja, widely known as “Nimsdai,” who died at the age of 43 in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan on July 30, 2026.
According to his expedition company, Elite Exped, all 10 members of the international climbing team lost their lives in the devastating incident. The avalanche struck between Camps 2 and 3 on Broad Peak, one of the world’s most challenging and dangerous high-altitude climbs. Severe weather conditions and the harsh terrain initially delayed rescue efforts, but teams later recovered Purja’s body along with several of his fellow climbers.
Nirmal Purja was celebrated as one of the most accomplished mountaineers of his generation. He gained global recognition in 2019 for achieving what many once thought impossible—climbing all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks in just six months and six days. This extraordinary feat, known as “Project Possible,” redefined the limits of human endurance and determination.
His journey and achievements were captured in the widely acclaimed Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible, which introduced his story to millions around the world and inspired a new generation of climbers and adventurers.
Before dedicating his life fully to mountaineering, Purja served with distinction in the British military, including the Brigade of Gurkhas and the elite Special Boat Service (SBS). His military discipline, resilience, and leadership played a significant role in his success on some of the world’s most formidable mountains.
Beyond his records, Purja was admired for his humility, courage, and commitment to uplifting the mountaineering community, particularly in Nepal. He advocated for fair recognition of Nepali climbers and consistently pushed boundaries while maintaining deep respect for the mountains he climbed.
